If you are opting for a moisturizer, it may well be that you are unpleasantly surprised by the results you get. It turns out that the ‘best moisturizer for dry skin’ is not the moisturizer which is advertised the most, or even the one which is the most expensive!

On the contrary, it may be that the most expensive moisturizer on the market is not even the best moisturizer for dry skin!

More often than not, people don’t realise that the massive efforts being made to promote the products in the market, including high profile ads in women’s magazines and on TV, as well as celebrity endorsements, while spendingiful amounts of money on advertising, leaves the average consumer out of pocket. Despite what the salesperson will tell you, spending a lot of time and money on promoting a specific moisturizer is not a guarantee that it will alleviate your dry skin problems. Why not?

Let’s look at an example. A cheap moisturizer, which is claimed to contain aloe vera, is actually mineral oil and petrolatum. Despite what you are being told, it is not natural, it is a derivative of a manufacturing process, and can contain hundreds of other contaminants and harmful chemicals that a dermatologist would not have approved.

Are you threaten with cancer? Again, the answer is a resounding yes…most skin care products contain Dioxane, another common chemical and a known carcinogenic. Just because a product lists an organic element on it does not necessarily make it true. Something that is claimed to be natural can contain a high percentage of an organic natural ingredient, but still contains a large percentage of impurities.

As you can see, it is tricky to make a responsible choice when it comes to choosing the best moisturizer for dry skin, and so many times people simply Choose Wisely. But there are times when you can easily select the wrong product. A common ingredient found in most moisturizers that you should watch out for is Petroleum. It is used in many products because it is extremely inexpensive, does not require any processing, and forms a white petroleum jelly that provides a film of temporary moisture.

But what it does most noticeably, is restrict and dry out the skin. When the skin’s natural moisture barrier is compromised, it is more susceptible to infections and adverse weather conditions. Using a petroleum based product to moisturize the skin actually traps this moisture in, which can cause the skin to become cracked and irritated. Think of it as epigenetics. What happens genetically happens environmentalistically.

There are many other skin care ingredients that you should watch out for. Here’s a short list:

This is just a short list of ingredients that need to be watched out for. I didn’t make it up, I was just pulling the names out of my own hatlist. I hope you found this exercise somewhat interesting and I hope that you take a moment to consider the impact that some of the big name companies make on their customers. While I’m not against helping the environment, wouldn’t you want to help the environment that you are using products with healthy ingredients that actually create healthier skin in the long run?

Natural plant based alcohols should be carefully avoided. They can cause the skin to become dry and dehydrated. Alcohols also strip the natural oils from the skin and cause the sebaceous glands to lower the production of oil, which only blooms the problem even more.

Mineral oil is another common ingredient in most moisturizers. It is a petrol by-product that also someone else names as petroleum jelly. It is supposed to be a moisturizer, but it mostly clogs pours and ages the skin. When combined with glycerine, it is called “Apply young” and instantly feels great on the skin, but when combined with alcohol, it is incredible at drying the skin as well.

And once again, being natural, doesn’t make it safe. My advice to all of you is that if you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, don’t put it on your skin… And please, for the record: If you put this stuff on your skin, you are also washing your hands, which is no good for your health or your skin’s health.

There are wonderful ingredients that a company in New Zealand (which makes some of the best all natural skin care products in the world) uses in their products that have been proven by scientists to actually stimulate the body to produce collagen and elastin. And they also use nano-technology to flaws smallest of the skin’s cells at a time, letting the products penetrate through many layers of skin, instead of just a few.
